The Donetsk Regional Museum of Local History, based at the Maznykivskyi residential care home for the elderly and people with disabilities, held an event entitled ‘Donetsk Region Without Distance’. The format of the event helped to create an open space for participants to feel a connection with their native region and to rethink its cultural heritage.
Through the interactive museum space they created, the organisers succeeded in combining historical facts, cutting-edge technology and face-to-face interaction. This allowed those present to leaf through the pages of Mykola Korff’s textbook «Our Friend», learn about how a printing press and a modern electronic microscope work, and try their hand at writing with a quill and ink.
A virtual tour of the museum galleries at the estate of V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko and M.O. Korff created a special atmosphere for the event. Using VR headsets, participants were able to visit the museum’s exhibition, walk through its halls, stand on the porch and admire the century-old chestnut tree, which had been part of the estate’s everyday life for many years.
This event will help to further ensure social and cultural accessibility for vulnerable groups. After all, physical limitations or a change of residence should not prevent people from fully participating in the cultural life of the Donetsk region.
