On the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day, the Donetsk Regional Museum of Local History held an online discussion titled “Dialogue of Generations: What Does Independence Mean to Each of Us?” The event brought together cultural and educational professionals, local historians, military personnel, and civic leaders to collectively reflect on the 35-year journey of modern, independent Ukraine. Ultimately, the discussion aimed to determine where our will is headed and whether this is how we envisioned it in August 1991.
The discussion served as an open forum for exchanging views and personal stories about how Ukraine’s attainment and consolidation of independence have influenced the participants’ professional paths, life priorities, and worldviews.
Special attention was given to the values that have taken on particular significance in independent Ukraine, and to the role of cultural institutions in preserving them and passing them on to future generations.
The event helped participants develop an understanding of the price we pay for national independence and its defense in the face of Russian aggression. It also reaffirmed that such meetings are particularly important today, as they help preserve historical truth and shape a shared vision of Ukraine’s future.
