To mark Ukrainian Statehood Day, a creative workshop entitled ‘Code of Tradition’ was held in the Kyiv region, organised by the Municipal Institution ‘Administration of the State Historical and Architectural Reserve in Sviatohirsk’. The event was attended by people from Donetsk Oblast who have been forced to live outside the region, as well as family members of Ukrainian defenders.
The aim of the gathering was not only to introduce participants to folk traditions, but also to create a space for communication, mutual support and the preservation of a spiritual connection with their native culture.
Participants in the creative workshop made their own horseshoe amulets as symbols of prosperity, harmony, family warmth and protection for the Ukrainian home. Each piece reflected a belief in peace and a happy future. Before the hands-on session began, participants learnt about the origins of this symbol and the beliefs associated with it, and were introduced to traditional decorative elements and their meanings.
The process of creating the amulets turned into a genuine form of art therapy. The creative session helped participants to unwind emotionally, provided a welcome distraction from everyday difficulties, and fostered an atmosphere of support, mutual understanding and unity amongst internally displaced persons and military families.
