On October 19, an organizational meeting was held under the chairmanship of Oleksandr Shevchenko, deputy head of the regional state administration, to discuss preparations for the 2027 commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Oleksa Tykhyi, an outstanding Ukrainian dissident, philosopher, educator, linguist, and human rights activist, and one of the founders of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group.

Representatives from the regional state administration’s departments responsible for culture, strategic communications, youth affairs, and the promotion of Ukrainian national identity participated in the meeting.

During the meeting, participants emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting the legacy of Oleksa Tykhyi, whose life and work served as an example of courage and dedication to the Ukrainian language, culture, and national values.

For the Donetsk region, Oleksa Tykhyi holds special significance. A native of the Donetsk region, Oleksa Tykhyi dedicated his life to the struggle for human rights, the protection of the Ukrainian language, and the affirmation of national identity. Under the Soviet totalitarian regime, he defended the right of Ukrainians to speak their native language, preserve their culture, and uphold human dignity. His integrity and resilience continue to inspire Ukrainians today to fight for freedom and their own identity.

Following the meeting, it was decided to establish a working group to coordinate the preparation and conduct of the anniversary events. The Department of Culture and Tourism of the Regional State Administration will organize its work.

Going forward, the working group will continue its systematic efforts and develop a detailed regional plan of events to honor the memory of Oleksa Tykhyi in 2027.

Donetsk Oblast preserves the memory of its outstanding figures, whose courage, integrity, and dedication to Ukraine hold an important place in national history.
