On August 29, Ukraine honors the memory of the defenders—both men and women—who died fighting for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of our country.
The sunflower is the symbol of this day. In late August 2014, as Ukrainian soldiers were breaking out of the Ilovaisk encirclement, Russian troops opened fire on the columns moving through the sunflower fields. Since then, the sunflower has become a symbol of remembrance for those who died defending Ukraine.
The Donetsk Regional Palace of Children’s and Youth Creativity invites you to join the regional campaign “Sunflower of Remembrance” and honor those who gave their lives for Ukraine.
How to participate:
Write a short essay, a message, or a remembrance of a fellow citizen—a male or female defender—who died defending Ukraine. If you don’t have a personal story, share words of gratitude. You can attach a photo of the hero or a themed image to your post.
Share your own drawings or creative works featuring sunflowers.
Create a symbolic sunflower together with the Palace’s artisans. Instruction cards and videos are attached:
