On 28 May 2026, as part of National Accessibility Week, a regional seminar entitled ‘Accessibility – it’s when you can!’ was held in Donetsk Oblast

The event brought together people for whom accessibility is not just a word or a line of work, but a daily endeavour to make society more open, attentive and accessible to everyone.

The event was attended by representatives of district state administrations, military administrations, local communities, cultural institutions and the region’s cultural community.

Yurii Ivashkevych, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine’s Ambassador for Accessibility, joined the discussion. The speakers at the seminar were Lesya Khemraieva, Head of the Accessibility Policy Department at the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, and Oksana Humenyuk, PhD in History, cultural heritage researcher, manager of cultural and exhibition projects, and chair of the public organisation ‘Navkolo Nas. UA’.

During the seminar, participants discussed matters that are both crucial and straightforward – respect for the individual, access to information, the opportunity to be heard, the freedom to participate in cultural life, and the absence of barriers to communication or interaction.

Participants shared practical experiences, examples of changes in communities, and solutions that are already helping to make the cultural space more open and comfortable for everyone.

Such initiatives are of particular importance today, as the Donetsk region lives under conditions of war, with thousands of people forced to leave their homes, change their familiar lives, and seek a renewed sense of support and inclusion.

That is precisely why accessibility today is not just about infrastructure. It is about humanity, mutual respect and a society in which every person has the opportunity to be part of shared life.

Because accessibility is when you can.
