Donetsk Oblast Will Celebrate Ukrainian Writing and Language Day with Cultural Events

Published 27 October 2026 year, 10:10

Amid a full-scale war for Ukraine’s independence, the Ukrainian language takes on special significance. It is an integral part of national identity, preserves historical memory and cultural heritage, and unites Ukrainians around shared values. Protecting and promoting the native language today means affirming the Ukrainian people’s right to their own history, culture, and future.

Ukrainian Writing and Language Day is an opportunity to once again highlight the richness and uniqueness of the Ukrainian language, to support those who study, develop, and promote the language, and to encourage children and young people to read, be creative, and actively use the language in their daily lives. To mark this occasion, language competitions, literary contests, theatrical performances, festivals, flash mobs, and other cultural and educational events are being organized in the Donetsk region.

One such event is “Language Race”—a creative language competition initiated by the Donetsk Regional Educational and Methodological Center for Culture. This year, it will take place in person for the second time at Mariupol State University in Kyiv. Participants will have the opportunity to test their knowledge of the Ukrainian language, demonstrate their linguistic ingenuity, and complete interactive tasks.

On October 29, the Donetsk Regional Children’s Library will announce the results of the regional competition for young authors of poetry and prose titled “I Am the Future of Donetsk Region.” Launched in 2019, the contest allows young authors to present their own works, share their thoughts and feelings, and describe their native region through the language of poetry and prose. In their works, participants reflect on the present-day reality of Donetsk Oblast, portraying its cultural heritage, resilience, and aspiration for a peaceful future.

The performing arts will be represented by the satirical comedy “Mina Mazailo,” based on the play of the same name by Mykola Kulish, performed by the Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theater (Mariupol). The play centers on issues of national identity, linguistic self-determination, and a person’s relationship to their own roots. This work, which remains relevant today, encourages reflection on the significance of the Ukrainian language in society and on each individual’s personal responsibility for preserving the national cultural heritage.

Educational institutions across the region will also join the celebration by holding a flash mob titled “My Favorite Ukrainian Word.” Participants will share their favorite Ukrainian words, explain their meanings, and describe why these particular words are special to them. This initiative will help reveal the beauty and expressiveness of the native language through personal stories and a genuine appreciation for the Ukrainian language.

Also, as part of the celebration of Ukrainian Writing and Language Day, the festival “Seek Beauty, Seek Goodness!” is planned, which will bring together educational and creative initiatives dedicated to the Ukrainian language, literature, and culture.

Young people from the Donetsk region will also take an active part in the celebration. In particular, an online dialogue titled “Language—the Nation’s Shield” is planned on the “Center for Unity and National Resistance” platform of the Donetsk region, as well as a themed campaign titled “My Language Is One,” dedicated to the importance of the Ukrainian language for preserving the national unity, resilience, and identity of the Ukrainian people.

Local communities in the Donetsk region will also join the celebrations. Cultural centers, libraries, and educational institutions will host literary gatherings, language contests, themed classes, lectures, festivals, and creative events. Special attention will be given to engaging children and youth in learning the Ukrainian language, fostering a culture of reading, and promoting the Ukrainian language among community members.

Ukrainian Writing and Language Day is not only an opportunity to celebrate the beauty and richness of the native language but also a chance to recognize its role in preserving national memory, strengthening social unity, and affirming Ukraine’s independence. Through language competitions, literary creativity, theatrical arts, and educational initiatives, the Donetsk region is joining the nationwide celebration, demonstrating respect for the Ukrainian language and a commitment to passing on its richness to future generations.
