The “Donetsk Region” Educational Hub hosted another online meeting as part of the educational series “History Education for All: Myths and Facts—Between Legend and Reality,” focusing on the topic “Stolen Identity: Rethinking the Imperial Myth of ‘Russian’ Donetsk Region.”

The event was attended by history teachers, educators, and anyone interested in the history of Ukraine who seeks to gain a deeper understanding of Donetsk Oblast’s past and critically analyze historical processes.

The speaker was Nadiya Temirova, Ph.D. in History and professor in the Department of History and Archaeology at Vasyl Stus Donetsk National University. The meeting was moderated by Lilia Denysova, a methodologist in the Department of National Education, Extracurricular, and Civic-Historical Education.

During the professional discussion, participants analyzed the mechanisms through which the Russian Empire and the Soviet regime systematically erased the Ukrainian roots of the Donetsk region from historical memory.

Using specific examples, the speaker deconstructed the artificial myth of the “Russian Donbas” and shed light on the region’s true history through the lens of decolonization, the restoration of historical truth, and the contemporary struggle for Ukrainian national identity.

The event took the form of an active dialogue, and participants received valuable materials for their teaching practice and further discussions.
