In Memory: Medical Workers from Donetsk Oblast Whose Lives Were Taken by the War

Published 15 May 2026 year, 10:00

As part of the “Light of Remembrance” initiative, launched by the non-governmental organization “Order of St. Panteleimon” with the support of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, every Friday at 10:00 a.m. we honor the medical professionals who lost their lives as a result of Russia’s armed aggression.

Vyacheslav Chernikin dedicated his life to medicine in Mariupol, serving as deputy director for economic affairs at the Mariupol Regional Medical Association for Child and Women’s Health. He was known as a highly skilled specialist and intellectual who enjoyed playing chess in his free time.

His entire life was inextricably linked to Mariupol. Here he graduated from School No. 32, earned a higher education degree at the Priazovsk State Technical University, and remained to work for the well-being of his hometown.

Despite the mortal danger, he remained in besieged Mariupol until the very end. On March 10, 2022, his life was tragically cut short at the age of 69—he was killed during enemy artillery shelling near the Central Market.

A year after the tragedy, Vyacheslav Chernikin was reburied at the Starokrymsky Cemetery. He is survived by two children—his son Mykhailo and his daughter Inna. The memory of this courageous economist in the medical field is immortalized by a memorial plaque.

May the memory of Mariupol’s civilian hero live on forever.
