The Russian occupation has destroyed the coal industry in the Donetsk region, while propaganda promises the automation of the mines

Published 30 October 2026 year, 14:52

Against the backdrop of the total collapse of the coal industry in the occupied Donetsk region, Russian propaganda is attempting to distract residents of the temporarily occupied territories by promising the “automation of mines in the coming decades.”

This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation.

Previously, propaganda had already promoted “innovative ideas” such as “growing vegetables in closed mines” or “filtering mine water.” But none of these projects were ever destined to be implemented due to their high cost. Their sole purpose is to create the illusion that the industry is thriving and “keeping up with the times.”

In reality, the coal industry has suffered a complete collapse. The occupiers’ attempts to save the enterprises by transferring them to “Russian investors” have failed. The investors realized they had fallen into a trap, so they tried to return 9 of the 15 leased facilities to the occupying authorities: the mines are unprofitable, and the only thing that can be done with them is to mothball them—at their own expense.

The Russian occupation has finally destroyed what the Donetsk region has always been proud of—its coal industry and the work of its miners.
