You can now see Bakhmut as it is remembered by several generations of its residents at the Kremenchuk Local History Museum. An exhibition titled “Ancient Bakhmut,” featuring graphic works by Ukrainian artist Serhiy Sadchikov from Bakhmut, has opened there. It was organized by the Bakhmut City Council’s Department of Culture in collaboration with the Bakhmut Local History Museum.
The event took place as part of the national project “Side by Side: United Communities.” The opening was attended by residents of Bakhmut, teachers and students from the Bakhmut community, as well as local residents.
For our fellow townspeople, each work holds special significance: the familiar landscapes evoke personal memories, family stories, and the years spent here. For the residents of Kremenchuk, the exhibition offers a chance to see Bakhmut beyond the images of destruction—as an ancient, distinctive city with striking architecture and its own unique character.
Grigory Sokolovsky, a historian and senior research fellow at the Bakhmut Local History Museum, joined the online discussion about the artist. He spoke about Serhiy Sadchikov’s artistic journey. The artist began painting as a child. He dedicated a significant portion of his body of work to his native region. In his paintings and drawings, he depicted the nature of the Donetsk region, the old courtyards and streets of Bakhmut, and the daily lives and work of the people.
Artem Ryas, director of the Kremenchuk Local History Museum, drew historical parallels between the two cities. Both have a long history and architectural heritage, and today they are brought closer together by partnership and mutual support.
