Fifty years ago, outbreaks of diphtheria, polio, and measles were common in many countries. Today, these diseases have almost disappeared thanks to vaccines, but they have not been completely eradicated. If vaccination coverage drops by even a few percent, the viruses return.
After the start of full-scale war in Ukraine, vaccination coverage declined in some communities due to population migration, destruction of health facilities, and power outages. That is why the Ministry of Health, WHO, and UNICEF are jointly supporting campaigns to resume vaccination, ensuring the cold chain and delivery of vaccines even to remote areas.
Vaccine-preventable infections are those that can be prevented by vaccination: measles, diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, Hib infection, COVID-19, pneumococcal and papillomavirus infections.
Today, healthcare workers, teachers, and community leaders must become “vaccine ambassadors.” They can help people overcome fears and myths by explaining that vaccines do not cause disease, but rather provide protection.
