On August 29, 2025, the Toretsk and Ruzhyn communities will unite to commemorate the defenders of Ukraine. As part of the "Side by Side: United Communities" project, a joint action "Sunflower of Memory" will be held, symbolizing unity, memory, and life.
The sunflower has become a symbol of this day, because it is at the end of August that it bows its heavy head - just as we bow in mourning for the fallen heroes. During the battles near Ilovaisk in 2014, sunflower fields became a tragic witness to the courage and sacrifice of Ukrainian soldiers. Since then, this flower has reminded us of the price of freedom, of the unbreakable bonds and of the memory we share.
On this day, everyone can pin a sunflower on their clothes as a sign of personal honor and gratitude to those who gave their lives for Ukraine.
On August 29, at 9:00 a.m., residents of both communities will join a nationwide minute of silence in memory of all the fallen defenders of Ukraine and civilians whose lives were taken by the war.
