To mark the Day of Remembrance for the Defenders of Ukraine who died fighting for the country’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, thematic events were held at humanitarian hubs in the Donetsk region, aimed at preserving the memory of Ukrainian heroes and sharing the story of their heroic deeds with future generations.
The events included commemorative ceremonies, informational and educational meetings, themed exhibitions, patriotic discussions, screenings of documentary films, and creative and sports activities for children and youth.
Participants honored the fallen with a moment of silence and recalled stories of courage and heroism displayed by Ukrainian servicemen from the Donetsk region. After all, for the region’s residents, the war is about the fates of their relatives, friends, and fellow citizens who stood up to defend their country. Many of them gave their lives defending their hometowns and villages, their families, and Ukraine’s right to be free.
An important focus of the humanitarian hubs’ work is engaging children and youth in events honoring the memory of the Heroes. Through creative activities, educational meetings, themed workshops, and discussions, the younger generation learns more about the history of the Ukrainian people’s struggle, the significance of national independence, and the value of freedom. Commemorative events at the hubs help preserve national memory and foster unity among Donetsk region residents who now live in various parts of Ukraine.
Visitors to the Donetsk region’s humanitarian hubs joined the “Sunflower” commemorative campaign. The sunflower has become one of the symbols of remembrance for Ukrainian soldiers who died defending our country.
Participants in the event pinned stylized sunflowers to their clothes, made symbolic flowers by hand, created themed displays, and took part in informational and educational activities. Children and adults had the opportunity not only to pay their respects but also to discuss the courage of Ukraine’s defenders, the value of independence, and the importance of remembrance. A moment of silence was observed to honor the memory of Ukraine’s fallen defenders.
Visitors to the humanitarian hubs and centers took part in the “I Honor the Warriors, I Run for the Heroes of Ukraine” race, which for the ninth consecutive year has been uniting Ukrainians around the memory of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
Despite being forced to relocate, people are united by their love for their homeland, their shared history, and their desire to preserve the memory of those who defended Ukraine. Defenders’ Remembrance Day is not just a date on the calendar. It is a reminder that independence and freedom come at a high price. It is our duty to remember every hero, to tell the story of their deeds, to support the families of the fallen, and to pass on the memory of the Defenders to future generations.
The humanitarian hubs in Donetsk Oblast are places where people can come together, support one another, and stay connected to their homeland. And today, it is especially important that the memory of our fallen heroes lives on—in our words, in our actions, in the upbringing of our children, and in our daily struggle for Ukraine’s future. Eternal memory and honor to the defenders of Ukraine who gave their lives for the independence, freedom, and territorial integrity of our state.
