A discussion on the Concept for Preserving the Local Identity of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Donetsk Oblast took place at Mariupol State University (Kyiv).
The event brought together representatives of government agencies, cultural institutions, scientists, artists, public figures, and international partners.
Chiara Dezzi Bardeschi, Head of the UNESCO Office in Ukraine, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech, emphasizing the importance of historical memory in the current circumstances as a significant factor in preserving local identity.
Local identity is the foundation of Ukraine's cultural integrity, the voice of communities that, even under occupation, preserve their memory, language, traditions, and connection to home.
During thematic discussions, participants presented their ideas and views on many pressing issues: the work of museums as centers for preserving memory and identity in wartime, the role of young people in shaping and spreading Ukrainian identity, the joint struggle of communities for historical memory and cultural heritage, contemporary art as a tool for recording history and preserving identity, and effective mechanisms for countering hostile propaganda, disinformation, and false narratives from the aggressor country.
Representatives of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Donetsk Regional State Administration took part in the event.
