Ukraine has created the first educational and methodological complex for the Urum language of the Nadazov Greeks

Published 06 March 2026 year, 16:29

Ukraine has created the first educational and methodological complex for the Urum language of the Nadazov Greeks — an important step in preserving a unique cultural heritage. It was created by the public organization “Nadazov Greeks: Urums and Rumeis” as part of the project “Let's preserve the languages of the Nadazov Greeks: let's learn Urum together” with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation.

This is more than a textbook. It is a return to the roots.

The educational complex is based on modern methods of teaching Turkic languages as foreign languages and Latin script. It contains basic vocabulary for everyday life, structured into eight thematic sections, cultural explanations, interactive tasks, and game elements. The materials correspond to level A1 and are suitable for both primary and secondary school children, as well as adults who want to discover the language of their ancestors.

On Saturday, March 7, 2026, there will be an open online lesson “Balalığım Çohrağı” (Urum: “The Source of My Childhood”), during which participants will be introduced to the teaching and learning materials for studying the Urum language of the Nazov Greeks.

The lesson will take the form of an open meeting, where anyone interested can learn more about the possibilities of studying this indigenous language.

During the event, the organizers will present the structure of the textbook and workbook, talk about the features of working with the materials, demonstrate the audio application, and perform several practical exercises together with the participants. A separate part of the meeting will be devoted to discussion and answering questions.

Participants are advised to download the teaching materials — the textbook and workbook — to their computer or phone in advance, if possible.

It is also worth preparing a notebook or notepad for notes and a pen or pencil.
