Job Vacancies for Veterans: Tips for Employers on How to Create a Successful Offer

Published 23 August 2025 year, 11:25

A job vacancy is the employer’s first introduction to a potential employee, especially to a veteran. A well-crafted job description significantly increases the chances of attracting qualified candidates. If your company seeks to create an inclusive, veteran-friendly work environment, start by reviewing your recruitment process and communication.

We have prepared useful recommendations to help you create vacancies that will be attractive to veterans and demonstrate your readiness to work with them.

1. Declare Your Support for Veterans

Show your openness to hiring veterans by adding relevant wording to job descriptions, the company website, or social media. Here are a few examples:

“We are grateful to veterans for their service and open to employing them.”

“This vacancy is also open to veterans.”

“Veterans are already part of our company team.”

In addition, share information about the company’s internal social projects that veterans can join and contribute to. Emphasize your support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, wounded soldiers, and children affected by the war.

On job search platforms, use special labels indicating that a vacancy is suitable for veterans (if such a feature is available). This will allow veterans to find your offers more quickly using search filters.

Distribute vacancies in veteran communities on Telegram, Viber, Facebook, and on specialized platforms such as Lobby X, LinkedIn, the Unified State Employment Service Job Portal, Happy Monday, the “Vacancies for Heroes” section, as well as through Veteran Hub.

2. Clearly Describe Qualifications and Job Duties

Provide a detailed description of job requirements and clearly outline responsibilities. Be honest and transparent about working conditions to avoid misunderstandings. This is especially important for veterans who have recently transitioned from military service and may not yet be familiar with the specifics of civilian jobs.

3. Highlight Key Working Conditions

Include in the vacancy information about additional benefits you offer, for example:

Special adaptation programs for veterans.

Health insurance.

Remote work or flexible schedule options.

Opportunities for professional and personal development.

Employee success stories.

Make sure the job description does not contain discriminatory wording regarding people with disabilities. Instead of describing physical requirements, focus on the actual tasks to be performed. Specify that the vacancy is open to people with disabilities and that the selection process is based on equal opportunities. Share vacancies with organizations that support veterans with disabilities.

4. Inform About Recruitment Stages

List the steps of the interview process so candidates can plan their time and prepare. For example:

Call from an HR manager.

Online interview.

Test assignment (if required).

Final interview.

5. Offer a Talent Pool Option

If there are currently no suitable vacancies, invite candidates to leave their information for future opportunities in your talent pool.

By following these simple tips, you can create job vacancies that are attractive to veterans and support their successful integration into civilian life.
