How Russia Is Trying to Discreetly Fool Search Engines and AI

Published 24 June 2026 year, 14:58

To distort information on global search engines and in AI programs, Russia has developed a new covert strategy of information warfare.

Russian intelligence agencies are flooding the internet with millions of automated fake articles. As a result, computer algorithms and chatbots process this flood of lies, mistakenly consider it true, and present it to users as reliable answers.

This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation.

Due to sanctions and a lack of funds, the Kremlin has abandoned efforts to develop its own artificial intelligence. Instead, it has focused on “poisoning” AI algorithms and language models with Kremlin propaganda.

In this way, the Kremlin is attempting to fully automate its propaganda, forcing global technology to work for its own ends. The main danger lies in the fact that hostile disinformation no longer appears as overt advertising or aggressive social media posts—it is disguised as ordinary, neutral computer suggestions, which makes it significantly harder to detect.
