Nationwide minute of silence

Published 07 October 2026 year, 09:00

Olena Hrechko, 42, was killed on August 4 when Russian forces shelled a public bus stop in the city of Toretsk. Eight people were killed that day.

Olena Hrechko was an officer with the Toretsk Criminal Police.

“Amid the large-scale invasion by Russian troops, the operative continued to serve in her hometown. The criminal artillery shelling of residential neighborhoods cut short the life of this courageous woman, who became a true example of spiritual resilience and strength,” wrote the Toretsk City Military-Civilian Administration.

Friends and colleagues remember Olena as a positive and energetic woman.

“Today, my friend—the best person there is—died! My comrade, a major and senior investigator. We were just talking yesterday. We laughed and joked, as always. I told you once again to move away from Toretsk. ‘Lord, why do you take the best people to be with you?’” wrote Anna Rakova, a friend of the deceased.

Olena had worked in the criminal police for over 20 years.

“I served with Olena for many years. We shared an office. She was a bright and kind person,”

wrote Roman Belov, a colleague of the deceased.

“Olena and I communicated about work. She was always in a great mood, always positive. I called several sources to check if Olena had really died. I couldn’t believe it, and I refuse to believe it,” added Marina Fyodorova, an acquaintance of the deceased.

At 9:00 a.m.—a nationwide minute of silence. The Donetsk Regional Military Administration and the Memorial platform: those killed by Russia are remembering the residents of the Donetsk region killed by Russians.
