Nationwide minute of silence

Published 08 June 2026 year, 09:00

Serhii Azarchenkov died on March 20, 2022, in his own home in Mariupol. During an airstrike, his heart stopped. The young man was 19 years old.

Serhii lived with his mother on the Left Bank district near Victory Square. Like many Mariupol residents, they were waiting for a “green corridor” and an official evacuation. They hoped they would survive despite the around-the-clock shelling of the area.

The tragedy occurred on the night of March 20.

“We were asleep. It was 11:00 p.m. One bomb hit the neighboring building. Two others struck ours. I remember a powerful blow to my face. I was wounded by shrapnel, while Serhii never even realized what had happened. His heart simply could not withstand it,” recalled his mother, Inna.

“His mother left his body outside with a note in his hand. She does not know where he is buried because she had to leave the city that very day,” added his homeroom teacher, Tetiana Ilnytska.

Serhii Azarchenkov was born and raised in Mariupol. He was the only child in the family. He studied at School No. 55.

“He was passionate about computer programming. He won prestigious competitions. He was knowledgeable, polite, and kind-hearted,” recalled his teacher, Liliia Aksamentna.

“Serhii graduated from school and was immediately hired by a Kyiv-based IT company. At his age, he was considered one of the best specialists in the country in creating 3D models,” added his homeroom teacher, Tetiana Ilnytska.

Serhii Azarchenkov is survived by his mother.

At 9:00 a.m., Ukraine observes a nationwide minute of silence. The Donetsk Regional Military Administration and the Memorial platform commemorate the residents of Donetsk region who were killed by Russian forces.
