Nationwide minute of silence

Published 12 March 2026 year, 09:00

Reconnaissance Sapper Oleksandr Hrechenko, call sign “Kazakh,” was killed on March 28, 2024, by a strike from an enemy FPV drone while carrying out a combat mission near Ivanivske in the Donetsk region. He was 44 years old.

Oleksandr was born in Mariupol, where he graduated from school. Later, he moved to Odesa, where he worked as a taxi driver.

He defended Ukraine in the ranks of the 80th Separate Air Assault Brigade. He first served as a driver and later as a reconnaissance sapper. He was awarded the “Golden Cross” badge.

From the first days of the full-scale war, he volunteered: he made more than 20 trips to Mariupol, evacuating civilians and delivering medicines and baby food. In September 2023, he voluntarily joined the Armed Forces and fought in the hottest areas of Donetsk region.

The defender was laid to rest at the Western Cemetery in Odesa. He is survived by three children and his relatives.

At 9:00 a.m., Ukraine observes a nationwide minute of silence. The Donetsk Regional Military Administration, together with the Memorial Heroes platform, honors the fallen defenders from the Donetsk region.
