Nationwide minute of silence

Published 17 January 2026 year, 09:00

The life of Dmytro Piven was cut short in Mariupol during Russia’s full-scale invasion.

In the second half of March 2022, a shell struck his home on Kalchanska Street. A few days earlier, the man had turned 55. His civil partner, Svitlana Horbatenko, was killed alongside him.

Dmytro Piven was born and lived in Mariupol. He worked as a diver and had recently retired. In his free time, he loved fishing.

“Dima was a good person. A wonderful husband and a father to Svitlana’s children. She and I were friends, and Dima was friends with my husband. Since 1996, Dmytro and Svitlana had lived together,” said their friend Hanna Prykhnenko.

She lost contact with Dmytro and his wife on March 2, 2022. By asking friends, neighbors, and relatives, she later learned that they had both been killed as a result of the shelling.

At 9:00 a.m. — a nationwide minute of silence.
