Nationwide minute of silence

Published 20 August 2025 year, 09:00

On March 13, 2022, Mariupol resident Mariia Tylyk went out of the basement with her dog Charlie. Shortly after, a Russian plane dropped a bomb. Mariia was killed. She was 20.

At the beginning of the full-scale war, her family lived in the Left Bank district. On March 3, her mother went to the maternity hospital, while Mariia stayed on the left bank with her boyfriend and grandmother. They were not allowed into the shelter with the dog, so they hid in the basement.

Her boyfriend went to look for transport, and Mariia stepped outside with Charlie. A plane dropped a bomb; everyone in the yard was buried under the rubble. Her mother survived because she was in the basement. Her daughter’s body was retrieved at the end of May and buried under a number in a trench at the Staryi Krym cemetery.

Mariia was born in Donetsk and had lived in Zaporizhzhia since 2014. Shortly before the invasion, she became a pastry chef. She adopted Charlie from a shelter, fed stray animals, and loved children.

Mariia is survived by her mother, grandmother, and brother, Sasha, whom she never got to meet.

At 9:00 — a nationwide minute of silence. Donetsk Regional Military Administration and the Memorial platform: Killed by Russia commemorate the residents of Donetsk region murdered by Russia.
