32-year-old Dmytro Zamorukhov was killed in Mariupol in March 2022. He was preparing food outside a dormitory on Huhel Street when shelling began. Beside him, a pregnant young woman named Anastasiia was also killed by shrapnel.
Dmytro was born in the village of Sakhanka in the Novoazovsk hromada, Donetsk Oblast. He grew up in an orphanage and later lived in a social dormitory in Mariupol's Livoberezhnyi district, where he worked for the municipal enterprise "Zelenbud."
"Despite his adult age, he was almost like a child inside—perhaps because he grew up without a mother or father and lacked love... He called me father. When my son and I went for walks to the sea, Dmytro would often join us. He was somewhat closed off, but he still asked for advice, and whenever he wanted to share what was on his soul, he would come to us. He became very good friends with my son," recalled Volodymyr Rudyk, Dmytro's friend and fellow dormitory resident who volunteered during the siege.
Dmytro had little free time, as he frequently looked for side jobs, but he was always ready to help other residents in the dormitory whenever needed.
After the full-scale invasion began and heavy bombardment intensified, Dmytro and his neighbors moved to the basement. They took turns cooking food over an open fire in front of their damaged building.
"It was Dmytro's turn to cook outdoors. He and Nastia, a young woman who was pregnant, went out into the yard. At that moment, a shell struck. They were killed instantly. Their bodies lay there for a long time before neighbors were able to pull them slightly aside, though they couldn't bury them. When Russian soldiers later entered the area, the remains of the deceased were moved into a garage in the dormitory yard," Volodymyr Rudyk shared.
