Nationwide minute of silence

Published 22 October 2026 year, 09:00

Senior Sergeant Oleksandr Balioz was born on July 8, 1985, in the village of Staromlynivka, Volnovakha District. He attended School No. 1. In 2010, he graduated from the Donbas National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture. After completing his studies, he moved to the town of Yalta—his wife’s hometown.

“To me, Oleksandr was not just a husband—he was my closest person, my rock, my friend, and the father of our children. I could always count on him. He knew how to be there for me in difficult times, and his actions showed his love far more than his words ever could,” said his wife, Sofia.

In 2019, he signed a contract with the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. He served as a senior border guard inspector—commander of the border patrol boat unit in the “Yalta” Border Guard Division of the 1st Border Guard Detachment.

“I have so many fond memories of Oleksandr. These are our ordinary family moments, which at the time seemed like just part of everyday life, but have now become priceless. I remember his smile, his voice, his gaze, his habits, our conversations, jokes, and shared plans. His friends also hold many fond memories of him,” said Sofia.

After the full-scale invasion began, Oleksandr, as part of a combined group of servicemen, held positions near the village of Staryi Krym, outside Mariupol. On March 3, 2022, he was at a company strongpoint. During shelling, he sustained fatal shrapnel wounds. He was 36 years old.

The border guard was posthumously awarded the Order “For Courage,” Third Class.

The soldier was buried at the Lisovy Cemetery in Kyiv.

He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

At 9:00 a.m.—a nationwide minute of silence. The Donetsk Regional State Administration and the “Memorial to Heroes” platform are honoring the fallen defenders from the Donetsk region.
