National Minute of Silence

Published 31 July 2026 year, 09:00

34-year-old Semen Cherkesov was killed in Mariupol in March 2022. The exact date of his death is unknown.

Semen lived in the city's Tsentralnyi District, near the maternity hospital. He worked as an electrician at the Azovstal steel plant. He enjoyed cooking, loved reading, and was skilled at welding complex metal components. Just three days before the full-scale invasion, he had finished renovating his kitchen on his own.

His family and friends remember him as kind, open-hearted, and caring. He had many friends, dreamed of the future, and was making plans for his life.

On March 18, 2022, Semen left home wearing his work uniform and never returned. His body was later found near the 1,000 Dribnyts ("1,000 Small Items") store.

His mother, Larysa, recalled that her son lived nearby and came to see her every evening. He would massage her legs, take care of her, wish her good night, and give her a kiss before leaving.

"My son was wonderful. He was very kind, attentive, and caring," she said.

Semen was laid to rest at the Starokrymske Cemetery. He is survived by his mother.

At 9:00 a.m., Ukraine observes the National Minute of Silence. The Donetsk Regional Military Administration, together with the Memorial: Victims Killed by Russia platform, honors civilians from the Donetsk region who were killed by Russian aggression.
