Junior Sergeant Dmytro Ukrainskyi, call sign “Shubin,” was killed on August 8, 2018, near Maiorsk in Donetsk region, while covering a reconnaissance group in the grey zone.
He reported an ambush and, together with a 19-year-old fighter, engaged in battle against superior enemy forces. After ensuring that the main group had withdrawn, he ordered his comrade to retreat. Communication was lost; terrorists took his body. On August 10, it was returned to Ukraine and identified by a tattoo.
He was born in Khrestivka, graduated from Vocational School No. 72 (underground electromechanic). In 1999, he served as a signalman aboard the frigate Hetman Sahaidachnyi, later working in a coal mine.
In 2014, he volunteered for the front; his wife and son moved to Sloviansk. He chose his call sign in honor of the spirit Shubin. With the Luhansk-1 Special Police Battalion, he fought near Sievierodonetsk and Debaltseve. Since 2017, he served under contract in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as a squad commander of staff vehicles in the reconnaissance company of the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade.
He was posthumously awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, 3rd Class.
At 9:00 a.m. — a nationwide moment of silence. The Donetsk Regional Military Administration and the Memorial of Heroes platform honor the fallen defenders from Donetsk region.
