Every year on the first Sunday in October, Ukraine celebrates Ukrainian Territorial Defense Day, established pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 417/2020 to honor the courage and heroism of citizens who have demonstrated an unwavering readiness to defend the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of our state.
The institutional development of this force demonstrates a unique evolution from civilian volunteer units and personnel reserves to a highly organized structure, since, as of January 1, 2022, in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On the Fundamentals of National Resistance,” the Territorial Defense Forces (TDF) have officially been operating as a separate branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In February 2022, it was the Territorial Defense Forces units that ensured the rapid deployment of the country’s defense capabilities in the shortest possible time, serving as a reliable shield for both rear areas and frontline positions.
The activities of the territorial defense units hold particular strategic and heroic significance for the Donetsk region, which has become one of the fiercest and most challenging battlefields in modern warfare. The legendary 109th Separate Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has become the main outpost of national resistance in our region. It began forming in the Donetsk region back in April 2018 and has united thousands of patriotic local residents.
The current realities of combat operations require constant modernization, and Territorial Defense Forces units are successfully integrating innovative technological solutions into their operations; in particular, aerial reconnaissance units and strike unmanned aerial vehicle systems daily destroy the occupiers’ logistics on the “roads of death,” demonstrating high precision in the use of FPV drones and electronic warfare systems. The effective integration of innovations, combined with impeccable knowledge of the local terrain and the high motivation of service members, enables the Territorial Defense Forces not only to hold defensive lines under constant enemy pressure but also to carry out complex tasks as part of military formations, and to minimize attempts to breach the state border or critical infrastructure, making their contribution to Ukraine’s overall security architecture fundamental and bringing the restoration of sovereignty over all of the country’s temporarily occupied territories one step closer.
