Representatives of the Regional State Administration’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs participated in a roundtable discussion on the search for missing persons and the identification of remains.

The meeting was organized by the European Union Advisory Mission in Ukraine in cooperation with the Commissioner for Persons Missing under Special Circumstances and representatives of Ukrainian and international organizations working in this field.

Representatives from the Ombudsman’s Office, the Central Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, expert centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Justice, law enforcement agencies, non-governmental organizations, and civil society organizations joined the roundtable.

The following issues were discussed during the event:

  • effective information exchange and sharing of experience between Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and other regions in organizing and investigating cases of missing persons;
  • identification of remains and interagency cooperation, as well as ways to disseminate best practices;
  • transparency in communicating with relatives about ongoing investigations, opportunities and challenges related to the return of captives, and the involvement of international and Ukrainian organizations in supporting and facilitating ongoing processes.

As of today, two unidentified body parts remain in storage at the State Special Institution “Donetsk Regional Bureau of Forensic Medical Examination” in the region.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs of the Regional State Administration participates monthly in meetings with the families of servicemen missing under special circumstances, held in accordance with the Regulations on Representative Bodies (Regional Working Groups) of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

At these meetings, explanations are provided regarding the provision of additional social guarantees to such families at the expense of the regional and local budgets.
