The traditional “Road to Unity” event, organized annually by the Donetsk regional center for physical health of population “Sport for all”, began on the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence and concluded on August 27.
This year, participants in the “Road to Unity” covered the route from Dnipro to Mukachevo, uniting residents of the Donetsk region through sports, physical activity, communication, and shared values.
At each stop along the route, races entitled “I honor the warriors, I run for the Heroes of Ukraine” took place. Internally displaced persons from the Donetsk region took part in the runs to honor the memory of Ukraine’s defenders – men and women – who gave their lives for the freedom, independence, and territorial integrity of our country.
In Kropyvnytskyi, participants in the “Road to Unity” met with a representative of Donetsk state university of internal affairs, familiarized themselves with the university’s facilities and equipment for physical education and sports, and discussed possible formats for future cooperation. In particular, they discussed encouraging residents of the Donetsk region to engage in physical activity, developing sports programs for veterans, and organizing physical education and health-promotion events.
This year “The Road to Unity” visited the Vinnytsia region for the first time. In Stryzhavka participants visited a facility where families of internally displaced persons from Mariupol are actively improving their health and spending their summer leisure time.
The final stop on the route was the city of Mukachevo. At the “Perlyna of Donetsk oblast” regional children’s and youth sanatorium and health resort, boys and girls who are there for health treatment, the resort’s staff, and participants in the “Road to Unity” initiative joined the event.
Such initiatives are of particular importance to the Donetsk region. They help maintain ties among fellow residents who, due to the war, are scattered across different parts of Ukraine, and they bring together children and youth, internally displaced persons, veterans, and the entire sports community of the region.
The “Road of Unity” is not just a route between cities. It is a path that unites the people of Donetsk oblast despite the hundreds of kilometers that separate them, affirming what brings us together: memory, mutual support, unity, and resilience.
