To receive free CT scan services, the patient must have an e-Referral issued. A key requirement for receiving these free services is that the electronic referral must be issued by a specialist, not by a family doctor, general practitioner, or pediatrician. This is important to know!
A CT scan is a specialized diagnostic imaging method. Therefore, the decision regarding the need for such an examination is made exclusively by the consulting specialist. That same specialist, if necessary, refers the patient for a CT scan.
This rule works as follows
If, after a consultation,
- a cardiologist determines that structural changes in the cardiovascular system must be assessed to clarify the diagnosis;
- a neurologist needs the results of a brain CT scan to confirm or rule out a specific pathology;
- a trauma surgeon needs to thoroughly evaluate a complex fracture or the consequences of an injury;
- an oncologist determines the extent of the lesion or evaluates treatment outcomes
The e-Referral is issued by the very doctor who decided that this examination is necessary.
This rule applies to all healthcare facilities that provide services under the Medical Guarantees Program, regardless of their form of ownership.
