As 80-year-old Ms. Nadiya left her home due to the danger, her first concern was for those who were still hesitating to evacuate. She distributed her food supplies to her neighbors and left bowls full of milk in her yard for the stray cats that often visited her. An evacuation team from the “Skhid SOS” Charitable Foundation helped her leave the frontline region of Donetsk Oblast and escorted her to a transit center in Lozova.
On the way, Ms. Nadiya talked about her life in Kramatorsk and sincerely shared her memories. She had nowhere else to go, so our team arranged temporary housing for her at the “Ocean of Goodness” Center for Social Adaptation of People with Disabilities in Dnipro, where she received care from the facility’s staff and psychosocial support from the foundation’s team.
Housing managers also helped arrange further shelter and secure state-funded long-term nursing care at a hospital in the Zhytomyr region. She will be able to stay there for two months, and social workers will help her find a place to live afterward.
This story of rescue from danger is one of many made possible by a joint project between the “Sхід SOS” Charitable Foundation and the KSE Foundation of the Kyiv School of Economics.
By joining forces with its partners, the “Sхід SOS” Charitable Foundation was able to:
- evacuate 314 people from frontline communities in the Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions;
- channel financial assistance from partners toward the start of repair work, restoration, and retrofitting of a large evacuation bus, which will eventually be adapted to rescue people with health issues who require special transportation conditions.
Behind every evacuation are lives saved, care for people, and their chance at a safe future far from enemy shelling.
