Stereotypes about "radical feminists" still exist in society, although in reality this movement is based on the simple idea that every person deserves equal rights and respect for their dignity.
To understand how this works in modern Ukraine, the Donetsk Regional Youth Center held an online event called "Feminism and Why You Shouldn't Be Afraid of It."
The goal of the event was to raise awareness among young people about the essence of feminism as a movement for equal rights and opportunities for women and men.
International Women's Rights Day is linked to women's long struggle for equal rights in the areas of work, education, and political participation. In Ukraine, this day is celebrated as part of a global tradition that originated with decisions made by the United Nations. It reminds society of the importance of equality and the need for constant work to overcome discrimination.
Today, these issues are of particular importance. In the context of war, Ukrainian women perform numerous social roles: they serve in the military, coordinate volunteer initiatives, lead communities, develop businesses, and support their families. Despite this, issues of equal access to opportunities, safety, and overcoming gender stereotypes remain relevant.
For some, the word "feminism" still sounds radical or even confrontational. But is this really the case? This is the question that the participants and guest speakers tried to answer during the event.
Гостями онлайн-зустрічі стали Світлана Дубина — правозахисниця прав жінок, засновниця та керівниця громадської організації «ВІСЬ», та Вікторія Безсмертна — феміністка, голова ГО «Інститут Креативних Інновацій». Під час зустрічі спікерки розповіли про історію феміністичного руху, пояснили, які права він захищає, та поділилися прикладами з українського та світового досвіду.
Окрему увагу було приділено розвінчанню поширених міфів про фемінізм. Учасники та учасниці обговорили, чому фемінізм не спрямований проти чоловіків, а навпаки виступає за рівність можливостей для всіх.
Важливо пам'ятати, що сьогодні, 8 березня - це передусім День захисту прав жінок, а не просто свято весни. Тож нехай ваші вітання цього дня супроводжуються щирими роздумами про рівність, повагу та підтримку жіночих прав у всіх сферах нашого життя.
