Young people from the Bakhmut and Hoshcha communities came together to discuss mental health

Published 17 September 2026 year, 12:23

Students from the Bakhmut and Hoshcha communities came together online. The event was attended by representatives of institutions of higher education, pre-higher vocational education, and vocational-technical education—who have been temporarily relocated from the Bakhmut city territorial community to safer regions of Ukraine—as well as students from the Hoshcha region.

The meeting took place as part of the nationwide project “Side by Side: United Communities” and the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Program “How Are You?”, initiated by Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska.

The webinar was led by Yulia Makogon, a psychologist at the Bakhmut Multidisciplinary Intensive Care Hospital. The topic of the discussion—“Facing Yourself”—was a candid dialogue about what is most often overlooked in the daily hustle and bustle: one’s own emotions, inner resources, and the ability to listen to oneself.

For students from the Bakhmut and Hoshcha communities, this meeting held special significance. Young people in Bakhmut are living and studying under evacuation conditions, overcoming the challenges of displacement and uncertainty. For them, such events are about feeling a sense of unity and connection to their hometown. At the same time, for young people from the Hoshcha region, this is an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of self-regulation, learn to cope with stress, and better understand their peers from other parts of Ukraine.
