Yana Stepanenko, a participant in the regional “Young Person of the Year – 2026” competition in the “Knowledge Leaders” category
Yana Stepanenko’s story is one of courage, resilience and an extraordinary love for life. After a Russian missile strike on Kramatorsk, Yana lost both of her legs. Yet even after such a devastating experience, she did not lose faith in herself or her desire to move forward.
Following a long rehabilitation, Yana learned to use prosthetic limbs and discovered running. Today, she takes part in prestigious international marathons in Tokyo, Boston and other cities around the world, as well as charity races. Her sporting achievements have a special purpose - supporting Ukrainian defenders. The funds she raises through marathons are directed toward prosthetics and rehabilitation for military personnel who have suffered severe injuries.
Her story became part of the documentary project “Running Ukraine”, while Yana herself has received numerous awards, including the “People of NV 2025” award, the President of Ukraine’s “Future of Ukraine” distinction, and an award from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine as part of the “Children - Heroes” initiative.
Through her own example, Yana proves that even the most difficult circumstances cannot determine a person’s future. Her strength lies not only in overcoming her own challenges, but also in supporting others and turning her personal story into a source of hope, inspiration and meaningful help.
