Published 13 May 2026 year, 13:03

As of early May 2026, 1,783 cultural heritage sites and 2,540 cultural infrastructure facilities have been destroyed or damaged as a result of Russian aggression in Ukraine.

This was reported by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.

Among the damaged cultural heritage sites, 161 are of national significance, 1,460 are of local significance, and 162 have just been identified. A total of 46 cultural heritage sites have been completely destroyed.

In total, damage has been recorded in 18 regions. The most damage was sustained by sites in the Kharkiv region—353, Kherson—303, Odesa—202, Donetsk—225, and the Kyiv region and the city of Kyiv—173.

At the same time, 2,540 cultural infrastructure sites were damaged as a result of shelling and combat operations, of which 518 were completely destroyed.

Cultural infrastructure suffered the greatest losses in the Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Sumy, Kyiv, and Mykolaiv regions.

In total, the following were affected:

  • clubs – 1,252;
  • libraries – 879;
  • arts education institutions – 191;
  • museums and galleries – 141;
  • theaters, movie theaters, and concert halls – 52;
  • parks and zoos – 11;
  • nature reserves – 9;
  • circuses – 4;
  • a film studio in Kyiv.

Damage has been recorded in 341 territorial communities across Ukraine. The highest number is in communities in Donetsk (46 TCs), Sumy (39 TCs), Kharkiv (34 TCs), Chernihiv (34 TCs), Zaporizhzhia (31 TCs), Mykolaiv (23 communities), Dnipropetrovsk (23 communities), Kyiv (21 communities), and Luhansk (12 communities) regions.

Almost the entire territory of Luhansk and significant parts of the territories of Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Kherson regions are under temporary occupation. This makes it impossible to accurately calculate the number of cultural institutions affected by the hostilities and occupation.

The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine and its partners continue to work together to address the consequences of the destruction and restore Ukraine’s cultural potential.
