At a time when running a business in Ukraine requires not only good ideas but also remarkable resilience, stories of small business success are truly inspiring.
Sonia Nahapetian, an entrepreneur from Sloviansk, is developing her own business in the retail trade of eyewear and related products. She has been operating since July of last year, and during this time she has managed not only to keep her business afloat but also to find opportunities for growth.
When it came time to expand — purchasing modern equipment and renting a more convenient space — Sonia decided to take part in the “Own Business” grant program.
With the informational support of employment service specialists, she prepared a business plan and submitted an application for participation.
In June 2025, Sonia became a winner of the program.
She used the grant funds to purchase an autorefractometer — a device that helps detect vision disorders and conduct preliminary diagnostics for children and the elderly — as well as to rent a new store location.
During a meeting with Nataliia Adamova, Acting Director of the Donetsk Regional Employment Center, the grantee shared that she had long dreamed of turning her shop into more than just a retail outlet — she wanted it to be a place where people could receive quality consultations and care for their eyesight. Thanks to the grant, this dream came true.
As the business grew, there arose a need to hire an employee. Once again, employment service recruiters stepped in to help — they assisted in selecting a sales consultant, Hanna, who started work in August.
Specialists from the center also advised Sonia to take advantage of another form of support — reimbursement of the single social contribution for employing an unemployed person in a newly created job. The decision to provide this compensation has already been approved.
“The Employment Service continues to support entrepreneurs — both beginners and experienced ones. Through grant programs, compensatory payments, and recruitment assistance, we create conditions that allow businesses not only to survive but also to grow,” said Nataliia Adamova.
Even in difficult times, there are always opportunities — the key is to have the will to act and a partner who supports you on the path to success.
