The Donetsk Regional Museum of Local History held another online meeting as part of the “Over Coffee at the Museum” series, on the topic “Ethical Communication with Combatants: Foundations for Interaction.” In today’s environment, employees of museums, community centers, and libraries, as well as educators, need to gain experience in communicating professionally with combatants. Mastering the art of ethical dialogue is becoming a vital tool for the nation’s healing, the successful reintegration of soldiers into civilian life, and the prevention of further trauma.
The speaker at the event was Tetiana Smirnova—a military psychologist, a PhD candidate in psychology specializing in PTSD, a member of the National Psychological Association, and a representative of the NGO “Women’s Power of Ukraine” Civic Movement. Ms. Tetyana highlighted important issues regarding psychosocial support for military personnel, veterans, and their families.
During the event, participants learned about the basics of a trauma-informed approach, discussed the psychological characteristics of people with combat experience, common social prejudices about PTSD, and practical aspects of ethical and safe communication. Special attention was given to how museum professionals and cultural workers can build relationships based on trust and an understanding of people’s needs.
The meeting helped participants develop skills for trauma-sensitive communication with visitors to cultural institutions. After all, it is an approach based on respect and empathetic interaction that allows us to communicate with service members, veterans, and their family members, and to demonstrate support through our actions.
