On April 30, the world observes Accessibility and Mobility Day. For modern Ukraine, this day has become a symbol of a new social contract, in which the right to freedom of movement is an integral part of human dignity.
The war leaves behind challenges that we see every day on the streets of our communities. This is the experience of thousands of defenders returning from the front lines, and thousands of civilians—adults and children—who are now learning anew how to interact with the world around them after sustaining injuries or complex traumas. Each of them has an unconditional right to an environment that does not create barriers but opens up opportunities.
According to the National Strategy for Creating a Barrier-Free Environment in Ukraine, accessibility means ensuring equal access for all population groups to the physical environment, transportation, information and communication, information and communication technologies and systems, as well as to other facilities and services in both urban and rural areas.
This means that respect for a person using a prosthesis or a wheelchair must be reflected in concrete solutions: from inclusive public transportation and functional elevators to adapted workplaces. When we work together to remove physical barriers, we give people back the ability to be active participants in their own lives: to work, raise children, and remain part of society.
At the same time, modern mobility is not just about architecture, but also about the accessibility of services. For those for whom every movement can be a struggle, digital transformation becomes a vital form of independence.
The ability to apply for assistance or access government services via a smartphone is digital mobility that breaks down bureaucratic barriers and saves time and energy. By giving everyone equal access to support regardless of physical condition or place of residence, we are laying the foundation for a country where digital convenience and an inclusive environment are the norm.
Freedom of movement and personal autonomy are a reality that is being built step by step through the joint efforts of the state, communities, businesses, and each of us.
