Nationwide moment of silence

Published 06 December 2025 year, 09:00

54-year-old Mykola Zinkov was killed by a landmine in the village of Rubtsi, Kramatorsk district. He died on 18 May 2022.

Mykola was born and lived in Rubtsi. He worked on a farm with livestock, and in recent years tended sheep. On 18 May 2022, he went to search for a neighbour’s cow that had run off, and was killed by a landmine. His godparents were the first to raise the alarm when evening came and Mykola’s goats were still grazing unattended. They went into the house — he wasn’t there. They began searching and found him dead, with severe chest injuries.

The village was under occupation, and Russian troops did not allow people to be buried in the cemetery — his godparents wrapped his body in a blanket and buried him at the edge of the garden. After Rubtsi was liberated, an exhumation was carried out, and with the help of the village council, he was reburied in the cemetery.

“Mykola did all the household chores; he never shied away from working in the garden. At work, no one ever complained about him,” said his wife, Olena Zinkova.

Mykola is survived by his wife and a daughter with a disability.
