Nationwide minute of silence

Published 10 January 2026 year, 09:00

Eighty-eight-year-old Ivan Adamenko was killed on April 25, 2025, as a result of Russian shelling in the village of Yarova, Kramatorsk district.

Ivan was born in the village of Studenok in the Izium district of Kharkiv region. From the age of 16 until retirement, he worked at the Izium Locomotive Repair Plant. He lived in Yarova with his wife. His daughter had a house nearby, and at the beginning of the full-scale invasion his younger son, Hennadii, moved in with his parents.

On April 25, 2025, Ivan Adamenko and his wife spent the night in a summer kitchen, while their son was in the house. At dawn, at 5:10 a.m., the Russian army dropped two aerial bombs on the village. One of them hit the Adamenko family’s house and took the life of Hennadii. Ivan Ivanovych sustained multiple shrapnel wounds. Ukrainian soldiers pulled him out through a window, but it was impossible to save his life — he had already died. Ivan’s wife was wounded but survived.

“Our father loved us, his children, very much. He was hardworking. He helped me build my house. He loved working in the garden. He drove a car until the very end. He used to go to Sviatohirsk to sell vegetables from his garden — not so much to earn money as because he loved talking to people. If it weren’t for the war, at his age he still had the health to live on,” his daughter Tetiana said.

Ivan Adamenko is survived by his wife, daughter, and three grandchildren.

At 9:00 a.m. — a nationwide minute of silence.
