26-year-old Anastasiia Buhaienko was killed on March 16, 2022, together with her younger daughter Karolina and her husband during a Russian airstrike on the Drama Theater in Mariupol.
A native of Mariupol and a graduate of the Mechanical and Metallurgical College, she was raising two daughters — Valeriia (7) and Karolina (2 years and 7 months). Orphaned at the age of 9, she grew up in an orphanage. She called her mother-in-law Iryna “mom” and always addressed her formally. Shortly before the war, the couple received an apartment and were in the process of furnishing it.
At the start of the invasion, the family moved to her husband’s parents’ home on Zelinsky Street. On March 11, an airstrike destroyed a neighboring building, killing dozens of people — after that, the family relocated to the Drama Theater.
On March 16, Nastia was in a room on the second floor with her children when the third floor collapsed downward; her elder daughter survived because she was near the window. Her husband, Oleksandr, was killed by shrapnel at the field kitchen. Anastasiia’s and Karolina’s bodies were never found.
