Nationwide moment of silence

Published 27 September 2025 year, 09:00

The life of Veronika Dehtiarenko was cut short on April 25, 2022, in Lyman.

That day, the girl and her family were visiting her grandmother, who lived in the Pivdennyi neighborhood. During an air raid alert, Veronika and her parents were heading to the basement of the building. The girl ran ahead.

An enemy missile struck right next to the entrance of a five-story apartment block. The blast wave threw Veronika back. She suffered severe injuries. It was not possible to get her alive to the hospital in Sloviansk.

Veronika was born on October 24, 2012, in Lyman. She was the only daughter of her mother and father. In 2019, she began studying at the Lyman Educational Complex “Gymnasium–Primary School” (Lyman Lyceum No. 1). At school, she is remembered as a responsible and well-mannered girl.

“Her notebooks were always neat, she wrote very carefully. Veronika became a teacher’s little helper: she gladly handed out notebooks, collected books and toys, watered the classroom flowers. She was active in all school activities, physical education lessons, and during breaks. This is how her classmates remember her — with a gentle, sometimes slightly mischievous smile,” the school recalled.

Veronika was laid to rest at the Masliakivske Cemetery in her hometown.

She is survived by her parents and other relatives.
