For the second year in a row, specialists from the Donetsk Regional Center for Tourism and Local History for Schoolchildren have been participating in the “Land of Giants” summer Plast camp at the invitation of the “Donetsk District,” a branch of the youth organization “Plast—National Scout Organization of Ukraine” in the Donetsk region. This year, as is traditional, the camp took place in early July at the “Sokil” camp-museum in the Ivano-Frankivsk region.
The camp brought together young Plast members aged 6 to 12, for whom a rich program was prepared that combined active recreation, learning, and adventure. Together with experienced educators and instructors from the Center for Tourism and Local History, the children learned how to provide first aid, practiced the proper steps to take in case of burns, trained to apply a pressure bandage correctly, and learned how to respond in emergency situations. Equally fascinating were the workshops on the ancient Ukrainian craft of weaving, where the children were able to create small items with their own hands and learn about folk traditions.
Special attention was given to outdoor skills training. The young Plast members learned to determine azimuths using a compass, work with topographic maps, navigate along a route, and mastered the technique of tying hiking knots. The traditional archery sessions were a real thrill, during which the children developed their accuracy, concentration, and self-control.
Meaningful leisure activities, new knowledge, and practical skills provided the young Plast members of Donetsk Oblast with a valuable experience that will help them act with confidence in various life situations.
